Week 14: Design Specifications and Prototyping This weeks blog is about design specifications and prototyping for our chemical device that we ideated in CA1. What is design specifications? It is a set of documented requirements that materials, design, product and service have to satisfy. For our product, the design has to be user friendly such as elderly people. Design specification is important as:  Provides design team with the information they need to build out new features or functionality of a product Allows product designers to know what they are building and what should the final build achieve  Examples of design specifications are: Material specification - Physical (Dimension, weight, voltage required etc) Functional/Performance specification  Standard specification  Test standard For part five of our CA2, we have create a design specification table for our group's chemical product based on what we learn.  Week 13: Operating Principles and Mechanism Design This weeks lesson is about operating principle of design, apparatus and equipment and 6 different types of mechanisms.  Operating principles: Most devices and equipment are based on these four working principles which are Mechanical Electrical Chemical Magnetism There are many everyday devices that function based on these working principles such as  Brewing coffee   Brewing coffee involves the leaching of coffee soluble  Foil shavers Foil shavers work based on reciprocating motion For our chemical product in CA1, the working principle is based on heat transfer.  Practical 5 (Egg Drop Challenge) This blog will mainly be about practical 5. The objective of the practical is to design and make a device that enables a raw quail egg to survive a fall from a height of 2 metres without any cracks.  Design: We took inspiration from a project online about egg drop challenge which utilise one of the strongest shape which is triangle. Insert making it a shape of triangles, we decided to change the shape into squares. First design Second design In the end, we decided to go with the second design as it would require less material which will reduce the time needed to print. Since the design looks like a porcupine, we decided to name our design project porcupine.
